Personal Health Insurance from Sun Life covers you and your family for routine and unexpected medical costs that government health and drug plans don’t cover. This includes prescription drugs, chiropractor and physiotherapist visits, and dental checkups. It is ideal for individuals aged 18 to 69 who are Canadian residents and is renewable for age 70 and over.
To be eligible for Personal Health Insurance, you and each person included on the application must be age 69 or younger as of the application date and a resident of Canada covered under provincial or territorial health insurance. The plan is renewable for age 70 and over.
Sun Life offers three plans under Personal Health Insurance: Basic, Standard, and Enhanced. The Basic plan covers basic medical and dental expenses, the Standard plan includes additional coverage for prescription drugs, dental, emergency travel medical, extended health and vision care, and the Enhanced plan offers the most extensive coverage including high annual coverage maximums, preventive, restorative and orthodontics dental care.
The Health Coverage Choice plan is a guaranteed issue plan from Sun Life where you can get approved regardless of preexisting medical conditions. It replaces your workplace or retiree group plan medical and dental coverage.
To be eligible for Health Coverage Choice, you must be a Canadian resident aged 18 to 74 and have been enrolled in a workplace or retiree group benefits plan within the past 60 days. Your spouse and dependent children meeting certain conditions are also eligible.
Personal Health Insurance does not cover expenses that are not legally allowed, cosmetic services, experimental items, self-prescribed products, items rendered by family members, expenses covered under government plans, non-Health Canada approved services, elective non-emergency medical treatments out of the province, and any additional exclusions listed in the policy.
For Personal Health Insurance, you can choose a start date up to 60 days in advance when submitting your application. If no date is chosen, coverage begins the day after the application is approved. For Health Coverage Choice, coverage starts the day after your workplace or retiree group coverage ends.
You can submit a claim through the my Sun Life Mobile app, online at mysunlife.ca, or using a paper claim form included in your Welcome Package. For the mobile app and online submissions, sign in, navigate to the Benefits section, and follow the instructions. Paper claims should be mailed with original receipts to the address on the form.
